This is a particularly unique New Zealand Rewarewa end grain cutting board, and one of only two boards made in this series.
The Rewarewa used to create these boards was discovered stored in the back of an old shed on the West Coast of New Zealand. No one could establish exactly when the timber had originally been milled, but it had clearly been sitting undisturbed for many years.
What immediately attracted us to this timber was its extraordinary grain. Rewarewa has a character all of its own, and rather than constructing the entire board in a conventional end grain pattern, we turned selected pieces of the timber to expose and highlight that distinctive grain.
The contrasting strips running across the board bring those different grain directions together, creating a pattern that is both understated and quite unlike our other boards.
After construction, the board was allowed plenty of time to rest and fully settle before receiving its final machining, fine sanding and polishing.
With only two produced from this particular timber, Board 016 is an individual piece that we are unlikely to ever reproduce exactly.
Each board is finished and conditioned with our own Wax N Wood Wood Butter, handcrafted from beeswax and food-grade mineral oil. This helps nourish and protect the timber while bringing out the natural colour and character of the grain.
With regular care and occasional reconditioning, these handcrafted timber boards are designed to continue their story for many years to come.
